Quick Start
This is the shortest path from an empty server to a working GiselleBot setup. It covers the order that avoids most first-run confusion: invite the bot, grant the permissions it needs, decide who can use it, then enable one feature at a time.
The other guides go deeper - this one only tells you what to do first.
Step 1: Invite the bot
Use Invite GiselleBot, or run /invite in a server that already has GiselleBot and use the link it returns.
Give GiselleBot the permissions it asks for. Administrator is recommended if you plan to use logging and moderation, but it is not required - you can grant only the permissions for the modules you actually enable.
Warning
If slash commands never appear in your server, the applications.commands grant may be missing from an old invite. Re-open the invite link and approve the prompt once; you do not need to kick and re-add the bot. The Migration Guide explains this in more detail.
Step 2: Decide who can use the bot
Most modules are locked to server managers (members with Manage Server) until you authorize more people. The exceptions are a handful of modules that are available to everyone from the start, such as utility commands, alarms and social ranking.
Open your server's Command Permissions page on the dashboard and authorize the roles or users that should run moderation, administration, forms, and the other restricted modules. Keep it to a small group at first - you can always add more later.
See Configuring Permissions for a walkthrough, or the Permissions System reference for how the layers interact.
Step 3: Open the dashboard
Go to the dashboard and log in with Discord. Pick the bot, then the server you want to configure. The server's module grid lists every module that is available there - use it to reach each module's settings page.
If a module page is missing, the module is unavailable or you do not have access to it yet. Check the Command Permissions page first.
Step 4: Turn on one feature
Pick one feature and finish it before adding another. A few good first choices:
- Logging and moderation - create your log channels, then enable each log type with
/log toggle. The Configuring the Administration Module and The Bot and Moderation guides cover the setup order. - A social feed - post new YouTube videos, Twitch streams, Reddit posts, or RSS items into a channel. Start with Configuring a Social Connector.
- A form - collect applications or reports through a DM questionnaire. Start with Building a Form.
- Self-assignable roles - let members pick roles from a button menu. Start with Reaction Roles and Self Assignable Roles.
Note
Test each feature with a real account that is not a server manager. A manager bypasses module authorization and channel overrides, so the manager's own view cannot tell you whether your members will be allowed to use the feature.
Step 5: Check the common gotchas
- Slash commands are hidden in Discord. This is Discord's own Integrations setting, not the dashboard. Check Server Settings -> Integrations -> GiselleBot.
- A module is enabled but a role still cannot use it. The role needs to be authorized for that module on the Command Permissions page, and the command may also check for a Discord permission of its own.
- A command works in one channel but not another. Check the module's channel overrides - whitelist and blacklist modes only apply to non-managers.
- A webhook-based feed is not posting. The bot needs Manage Webhooks in the destination channel so it can create and use the webhook.
